Interim Director of Legal & Monitoring Officer
Location: North West England (Hybrid)
Contract: Locum, Full-Time (3-6 months, pending permanent recruitment)

A large unitary authority in the North West is seeking an experienced Interim Director of Legal & Monitoring Officer to lead its legal and governance functions whilst permanent recruitment is underway.

Ideally, our client is seeking someone on a full-time basis, however there may be some flexibility for reduced hours. The role is expected to last 3 to 6 months with the successful candidate working on a hybrid basis, ideally approximately 2 days per week on site, however, some flexibility could be made for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fulfil statutory duties as the Monitoring Officer, ensuring the council operates within legal and constitutional frameworks
  • Provide strategic leadership of the Legal, Governance, and Democratic Services functions
  • Act as the principal legal adviser to the Council, Cabinet, and senior officers
  • Maintain and review the Council's Constitution, promoting good governance and compliance
  • Ensure effective decision-making processes and legal support for council meetings
