Job Description:
£70,697 - £75,228 per annum
Bolton is a town with a proud history and a bright future. With a population of over 300,000, Bolton stands as a beacon of cultural richness, historical significance and vibrant community spirit. From enhancing public health to bolstering our local economy, we are proactive in our strategies to ensure that no one is left behind. Those working in our corporate core, including our legal and democratic services team, are at the heart of enabling us to achieve our ambitions whilst ensuring we have appropriate risk management and governance controls in place.
We are seeking an experienced local government lawyer and governance professional to join us as Deputy Borough Solicitor/Deputy Monitoring Officer, where you will lead the day-to-day delivery of legal services, deputise for the Borough Solicitor when required and provide clear, timely advice to senior officers and elected Members on complex and sensitive matters. We are transforming our team to ensure that we provide a modern legal and governance function that supports the Council constructively and consistently.
In this role, you will contribute to shaping and embedding an effective and forward looking legal services approach, while championing a culture of continuous service improvement. You will help build the capacity and capability needed to deliver high quality outcomes, including stronger internal client management, robust quality assurance and practical guidance through enhanced internal processes.
In your legal work, you will oversee a significant range of legal matters, making sound decisions about when to manage matters in-house and where to instruct and manage external advisers. You will also play an important part in supporting the Council’s statutory and governance services, including democratic services, information governance, registrars and coroner responsibilities.
As an authorised person (qualified solicitor, barrister or chartered legal executive) you will bring substantial post-qualification experience with strong public law and governance knowledge, and a track record of leading people and managing resources. You will help us strengthen information governance, where we need renewed leadership and bring a clear approach to risk, compliance and good practice, making the most of investment in technology and develop the team so that continuous improvement becomes the norm.
