We have a vacancy for a Criminal Litigation and Licensing Lawyer within the legal service.

As a Lawyer with the Criminal Litigation and Licensing team, you will lead on a wide variety of criminal prosecutions of a regulatory nature. Your case load will include trading standards, environmental health, education, licensing, waste enforcement, food hygiene and planning enforcement cases and you will have conduct of prosecutions from beginning to end. 

You will regularly attend the Magistrates’ Court to prosecute cases on behalf of the City Council and will be a confident and capable advocate, familiar with criminal practice and procedure. The successful candidate will be confident in offering legal advice and guidance to City Council Officers and preparing all documentation associated with a criminal prosecution. Licensing Committee experience would be an advantage in this role. 

As a lawyer you will be a proactive and innovative legal advisor, providing high-quality, professional advice. You will represent the City Council in legal proceedings and meetings. You will have advocacy skills and a commitment to exceptional legal support.

Key responsibilities:

  • Acting as a legal advisor to ensure compliance with statutory duties and obligations, to protect the best interests of the Council.
  • Preparing, negotiating and advising on all aspects relating to a legal case
  • Attending courts, tribunals, public inquiries or other meetings, undertaking advocacy where required.
  • Representing clients in negotiations and discussions and to also to instruct external legal services.
  • Conducting and managing a wide-ranging caseload of both straightforward and complex legal and advice work.
  • Preparing reports for, and attending Committees, Sub-Committees and Executive Committee as required.
  • Supporting the Legal Services Management Team to meet practice management requirements and ensure compliance with policies and procedures. Play a key role in maintaining high service standards.

You will need to possess a current practising certificate as a Solicitor/Chartered Legal Executive or be a member of the Bar who has completed pupillage/registered Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives.
