Job Description:

Salary: £53,691 to £57,311 per annum depending on skills and experience

Permanent contract
Location: Lewes & Eastbourne

A fantastic and rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified Governance lawyer to join our well regarded, professional and friendly legal team on a permanent basis. The team serves two major councils in the South East.

The successful candidate must be qualified to practice as a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales. This full-time post includes the ability to work flexible hours, working patterns and locations.

The post holder should have the ability to advise on governance matters including byelaws, public spaces protection orders, assets of community value, environmental health matters (including health and safety), road closure powers, access and use of common land, intellectual copyright, Equality Act, carbon reduction and climate change.

The candidate should have the necessary skills and experience in giving written and oral advice to officers, as well as excellent knowledge and understanding of corporate governance processes, such as decision-making powers and other constitutional matters. They will have a keen eye on developments relating to the recently announced devolution and local government reorganisation plans, be able to deliver timely and appropriate updates, as well as effective and practical advice on the same.

The role also includes the statutory position of Data Protection Officer, management of the Information Governance Manager and Senior Responsible Officer for surveillance governance.

Working across two councils, our area is unique in its mix of environments, including the larger urban area of Eastbourne, the historic county town of Lewes, small towns and villages in and around the South Downs National Park and a large area of coastal strip, and so the work is varied and interesting.

The successful applicant will work alongside a team of friendly lawyers as part of the Legal Services department, supported by a dedicated practice manager and case management system.  Lawyers have access to the leading precedent and know-how resources.

There is a substantial benefits package included such as:
  • Local Government pension
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Generous annual leave entitlement up to 30 days after 5 years of service
  • Learning and development training tailored to your role
  • A wide variety of staff support networks including access to a wellbeing network, staff discounts and more.
For those interested in relocating, the Lewes and Eastbourne areas are much sought after, with vibrant economic, cultural and recreational facilities, as well as easy travel to/from London.

In exceptional circumstances, a part-time role would be considered.
