Job PurposeTo provide high quality and solution focused legal services to the Council, schools and other clients in one of the following areas:
- Safeguarding – Children and Adults
- Commercial & Regeneration (including property, planning and contracts)
- Litigation (including civil, criminal & education)
To be a legal advisor in an area of legal specialism: Children’s Safeguarding
To be able to provide advice on legal matters affecting local authorities, including local authority governance where appropriate.
To ensure best value and appropriate use of public resources in the provision of advice
To support the Principal Lawyer for the team in delivering a high quality, effective and efficient legal service in the relevant area.
To be a trusted advisor and build strong professional relationships with key service areas.
To supervise, support and develop more junior colleagues as required.

- To undertake and maintain relevant mandatory training in line with legislation.
Key Service Accountabilities
- To manage with minimal supervision a full caseload of legal matter within the relevant specialism.
- To provide proactive and solutions focussed advice that supports the delivery of the council’s priorities and policies.
- To support the Principal Lawyer for the team in the provision of high quality, effective and efficient legal advice in the relevant area.
- Where appropriate to undertake advocacy on behalf of the council.
- To help embed good local authority governance as part of the Legal Services function.
- To undertake relevant continuing professional development to keep abreast of new developments in the relevant area and to share this with the service, teams and wider council so they are aware of current and future law and practice affecting the authority.
- To comply with legal procedures and policies, including time recording.
- To manage available resources effectively and efficiently.
- To assist the Principal Lawyer/ Head of Legal Services on specific projects.
- To comply with the relevant professional rules of conduct at all times
