Job Description:

Up to £129,781 per annum

A gateway to London and the world, Hounslow is one of the largest boroughs and most dynamic economies in the country.  Our 288,000 residents speak 188 languages, so Hounslow is truly the world in one place. This is your opportunity to direct your leadership, energy and expertise into building further on the success of a high profile and innovative law and governance service which underpins and enables outstanding governance and decision-making in Hounslow.

About the role
As Director of Law & Governance you’ll lead and develop a broad service portfolio including our legal services hub, which brings together inhouse strategic legal expertise with a partnership arrangement with HB Public Law. This is a place where reputations are made and careers in local democracy are forged.  It is a place where innovation is the norm and where a culture of excellence, can do and customer service is prized.

Your reach in this role will see you provide leadership for our outstanding elections and democratic services teams.  Uniquely, you will also have the opportunity to lead and develop a commercial, front-line service: our registrars, cemeteries and nationality service.

Your role as Monitoring Officer will give you the opportunity to work with a committed, professional and respectful group of Members who work successfully with Officers to realise the vision for Hounslow.  Integral to your role will be your close working relationship Chief Executive and Section 151 Officer – the “golden triangle”.

Under your leadership, you and your teams will provide the legal and governance advice, challenge and support that powers the continuing regeneration and growth of Hounslow as a place that is greener, healthier, cleaner, thriving, safer and liveable.  We have a large HRA housing stock which creates considerable demand for the legal service, and a large and complex wholly owned group of companies, Lampton 360, for which you will work closely with Council and Company leadership and exercise the shareholder role.

About you
This is a role for a candidate with passion, hunger, personality and drive whose next step is as a Monitoring Officer for a large authority.  You could be in a Deputy role in London or another unitary currently, or you could be working in a smaller authority as a Monitoring Officer.  Either way we will expect you to be a qualified solicitor or barrister able to lead, influence and drive change not only in your service areas but also across our senior leadership team in Hounslow.
