Bury is a borough like no other in Greater Manchester. A place that blends rural character with a vibrant urban centre, shaped by exciting regeneration, diverse communities and a strong sense of identity. Our LET’s Do It approach underpins a practical, ambitious and focused drive to improve outcomes and our delivery speaks for itself, we are doing It!

We are looking for an ambitious and experienced leader to join us as Assistant Director of Legal and Governance. Working closely with colleagues and engaging with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, you will be a key strategic voice across the Council. You will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight across legal services, registrations, performance, compliance, information governance and support the Bury Safeguarding Partnership Business Unit. Leading multidisciplinary services, you will continue our commitment to developing talent and building strong, supportive and customer-focused teams.

Your focus will be on setting clear strategic direction, delivering operational excellence and ensuring services are efficient, effective and responsive. As Deputy Monitoring Officer, you will support the Director of Law and Governance in ensuring that the Council operates lawfully and maintains the highest standards of governance, probity and ethical conduct, identifying and addressing emerging risks and opportunities.

We are seeking someone with a strong grounding in local government law and governance, or experience gained in a similar environment. You will bring credibility, integrity and confidence as a senior leader, with detailed knowledge of local government legislation, constitutional arrangements, public and administrative law, as well as standards and ethical frameworks. You will be able to present complex advice clearly to Members and senior leaders, manage competing pressures and work collaboratively across organisational boundaries. Importantly, you will bring fresh ideas and a commitment to our LET’s Do It approach, helping to shape services that deliver real impact for Bury’s residents and communities.

If you want to lead a broad and influential portfolio and be at the heart of legal, governance and service transformation across our borough, we are keen to hear from you.
