Senior Democratic Services Officer – Midlands –  Full Time – Up to £400 per day (Outside IR35) – Initial 3 Months+
Venn Group's specialist legal team are currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Democratic Services Officer to join a friendly Midlands Local Authority on an interim basis. This is an excellent opportunity to lead the Democratic Services function, supporting Members and senior officers while overseeing the delivery of high-quality democratic governance.
The Role:
Position: Senior Democratic Services Officer
Working Arrangement: Full Time (37 hours per week), hybrid working with 1-2 days per week on site in the Midlands.
Duration: Initial 6 months with the likelihood of extension
Rate: Up to £400 per day (Outside IR35)
Start: Within the next 1–2 weeks
Key Responsibilities:
  • Managing the day-to-day operation of the Democratic Services team, supervising and assisting the Democratic Services Officers
  • Leading the Council's Overview and Scrutiny function, providing high-quality support to Scrutiny Committees
  • Supporting committees, working groups and task and finish groups, including preparing agendas, reports and minutes
  • Providing advice and guidance to elected Members and senior officers on democratic governance and constitutional matters
  • Liaising with internal departments, external organisations and partner bodies to support effective decision-making
  • Ensuring actions arising from committee meetings are progressed and implemented
  • Maintaining statutory registers and Democratic Services records
  • Developing and improving Democratic Services processes and promoting continuous service improvement
 
Requirements:
  • Significant experience working within Democratic Services in a Local Authority
  • Previous experience supporting Overview and Scrutiny Committees
  • Strong knowledge of local government governance, committee procedures and constitutional matters
  • Excellent communication, organisational and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
