Job Description:

£25,242 - £26,703 per annum

2 fixed-term posts (2-year posts).

Various Start Dates Available.

We are looking to recruit two Trainee Solicitors, on a fixed-term basis, to join the Legal Services Department within West Yorkshire Police. This is an exciting opportunity to join an experienced team of lawyers who deal with high profile and complex cases.

We are one of the largest in-house police legal teams in the country and are expanding further. We provide a range of legal advice and support to the whole of West Yorkshire Police. We undertake a vast range of work from civil litigation and commercial to operational policing, and police misconduct cases.

In this role you will undertake a 2-year training contract providing a comprehensive legal service to the Chief Constable. The training contract will cover at least 3 areas of law as required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. In addition to their own supervised caseload, the successful candidates will be required to support Solicitors with litigated files. There will also be the requirement to undertake your own advocacy in the Magistrates’ Courts (subject to Rights of Audience been requested and granted).

Though it is not deemed essential it would also benefit your application to possess advocacy experience and knowledge of civil law relating to the Police Service.

You must have successfully passed the Legal Practice Course and will also ideally have proven case handling experience in a Solicitor’s office or a similar legal environment.

This role will be based in Wakefield with requirements to regularly attend Court hearings (including observing Counsel) throughout West Yorkshire, so Applicants must have the ability and willingness to travel and work flexibly throughout the region.

We offer generous entitlements and supportive policies to enable a better work-life balance, some of which are listed below:
  • Hybrid working (office- based full time for the first 6 months and then possible hybrid working at the discretion of the Training Principal).
  • Generous annual leave allowance plus statutory Bank Holidays.
  • Flexi time scheme based on a standard working day of 7 hours 24 minutes and a 37-hour week.
  • Access to a range of Occupational Health facilities.
  • Generous pension scheme.
  • Employee Assistance Service (accessible 24/7).
Previous applicants need not apply.
