Locum Education Solicitor – Full‑Time – Hybrid – £60 per hour (Umbrella)
Education Lawyer – 3–6 Month Contract
North Based Local Authority Legal Services Team
Advocacy Absolutely Required – Not Negotiable

A Local Authority is seeking an experienced Education Lawyer / Education Solicitor for a 3–6 month locum placement. This position is full‑time with hybrid working ideally. Advocacy experience is essential and non‑negotiable, and the role involves managing a busy caseload primarily within Education Law, with some Adult Social Care work when required.

The successful candidate will provide legal advice, guidance and support to the authority and its maintained schools on a wide range of Education Law matters, including complex issues. Responsibilities include conducting advocacy at all levels before the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (SENDIST), Appeal Panels and other relevant tribunals; offering proactive and practical legal advice; interpreting legislation and advising on its operational impact; preparing bundles, skeleton arguments, witness statements and all documentation needed for hearings; liaising with Counsel as required; and attending relevant meetings including safeguarding‑related boards, partnership groups, advocate meetings and Legal Gateway meetings.

Essential requirements include strong and demonstrable advocacy experience, particularly in SEND Tribunal matters; a solid background in Education Law, including SEND; the ability to interpret and apply legislation clearly and practically; excellent written and verbal communication skills; confidence advising officers at all levels; and the flexibility to assist with Adult Social Care matters where needed.

This role offers hybrid working, with office attendance negotiable but some flexibility required. Tribunal hearings are predominantly remote, with occasional in‑person attendance possible. Full‑time hours. £60 per hour via umbrella company.
