Criminal Litigation Lawyer – £50+ per hour – London – Hybrid Working
 
Job Title: Criminal Litigation Lawyer
Council: London Local Authority
Working Pattern: Full-time – Hybrid (1 day office attendance per week, with flexibility to substitute for committee attendance)
Rate: Negotiable (£45-50 per hour umbrella typical; competitive pricing preferred)
Duration: 3 months+ (potential for extension)
 
Venn Group’s public sector legal team is working with a London Local Authority, who are seeking an Criminal Litigation Lawyer to join their legal team on a locum basis. This role is ideal for a lawyer with solid experience in regulatory prosecutions and an ability to support both legal proceedings and internal governance functions.
 
Job Overview:
The successful candidate will handle a varied caseload of regulatory litigation and provide legal advice and representation across a broad range of criminal matters. Cost-effectiveness is a key factor for this appointment, making it an excellent opportunity for candidates offering value-driven services.
 
Key Responsibilities:
• Manage a caseload of regulatory prosecutions in the Magistrates’ and Crown Court, including planning enforcement, animal welfare, internal fraud, blue badge fraud, and EPA s80 matters
• Handle licensing appeals under the Licensing Act 2004 and property tribunal appeals under the Housing Act 2004
• Provide legal advice and support at Licensing Sub-Committee hearings
• Attend interim hearings in the Magistrates’ Court as required
• Assist with reviewing and advising on internal policies and governance documents
 
Requirements:
• Qualified solicitor, barrister, or FILEx Legal Executive with relevant experience in local authority enforcement and litigation
• Practical knowledge of licensing law, planning enforcement, and housing legislation
• Confident advocacy skills for court and committee hearings
• Ability to provide clear, concise legal advice and work effectively with council departments
• Strong drafting and organisational skills
 
This role is ideal for a capable Criminal Litigation Lawyer who can provide reliable legal support on a budget-conscious basis. It offers flexible working and the chance to contribute to a broad range of regulatory matters within a local government legal team.
