Lawyer - Corporate Governance
Location: Sheffield (Local Authority role)
Initial 3-6 month contract
Rate: Negotiable, umbrella
We are looking for a lawyer with experience of local authority governance to provide short term corporate governance support to cover for a period of staff absence. Work will include:
- advising on the legal requirements and limitations of a committee system of governance (including area committees)
- advising on the legal requirements of the Council’s constitution and contributing to a review of the constitution
- contributing to/advising on/reviewing/drafting policy documents and protocols connected with the operation of the constitution and the committee system
- advising on the scheme of delegations within the constitution and the requirements for reports to decision-makers
- advising on local government constitutional and administrative law
- attending meetings as required
- Ideally candidates will have previous experience of advising on/drafting local authority constitutions.
- Familiarity with the modern committee system would be a definite advantage as would experience of putting complex legal concepts into plain language as we want our constitution to be as easy to understand for a lay person as possible.
- Candidates need to be capable of reading and understanding large amount of documents quickly.
