Job Description:

Civil Litigation / Housing Lawyer

Thurrock (Local Authority role)

Initial 3-6 month contract

Rate: Umbrella, negotiable

 

35 hours per week

  1. To specialise in Criminal and Civil Litigation Law
  2. To participate in the provision of a comprehensive legal service to the Council and other client departments as may be required.
  3. To deal with all work efficiently and cost effectively; achieving the purposes of the customer in each case.
  4. To provide expert advice and make decisions on litigation legal matters and on the management of risk on contentious legal issues.
  5. To undertake advocacy in all relevant court and tribunal cases including contested hearings on behalf of the Council.

Skills & Experience:

  • experience and a sound knowledge of Housing law covering seeking orders for possession, ASB, housing disrepair claims, breach of injunction etc.
  • experience and a sound knowledge of defending Judicial Review Proceedings • experience and a sound knowledge of prosecutions under the Education Act 1996.
  • experience and a sound knowledge of prosecutions under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
  • experience and a sound knowledge of Trading Standards prosecutions under the Consumer Rights Acts 2015.
  • experience and a sound knowledge of prosecutions for underage sales offences.
  • experience and a sound knowledge of prosecutions for food and safety offences.
  • experience and a sound knowledge of prosecutions under the Planning law.
  • experience and a sound knowledge of licensing sub-committee hearings and appeals under the Licensing Act 2003.
  • experience and a sound knowledge of the Care Act 2014, especially debt recovery of monies that the Council may charge under statue such as in the case of Adult Social Care fees.
  • ability and knowledge to do other litigation work.
