Job Opportunity: Democratic Services Officer – West Midlands – Hybrid Working – Up to £25 per hour

Location: West Midlands, UK
Rate: £20-£25 per hour (Umbrella)
Working Arrangement: Full-time, hybrid – with office attendance required for committee meetings
Contract Duration: Initially 3 months, with strong potential for extension

An excellent opportunity has arisen to join a well-regarded Local Authority in the West Midlands as a Democratic Services Officer on a temporary full-time basis. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, contributing to the heart of local governance. You’ll be at the forefront of supporting democratic processes and ensuring effective governance within the council.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Committee Support: Provide end-to-end support for weekly committee meetings, including preparing agendas, arranging meetings, and distributing papers and minutes.
  • Minute Taking: Accurately capture and prepare minutes for committee meetings, ensuring all decisions and discussions are clearly documented and distributed in a timely manner.
  • Governance Compliance: Ensure all committee activities align with relevant legislation and council procedures, offering advice on procedural matters when needed.
  • Liaison: Serve as the primary contact between the committee, members, officers, and the public, handling queries and facilitating seamless communication.
  • Administrative Duties: Maintain comprehensive records related to committee activities, including attendance logs and correspondence.
  • Meeting Coordination: Organise and manage logistics for committee meetings, including room bookings, technical arrangements, and attendee confirmations.
  • Support to Councillors: Provide vital administrative support to councillors, assisting with report preparation and briefings.

About You:

You’ll bring experience as a Democratic Services Officer or in a similar governance role, with a thorough understanding of council procedures. Your strengths will include:

  • Experience: Proven background in Democratic Services or related administrative/governance roles.
  • Minute Taking: Demonstrated ability to take accurate, comprehensive minutes.
  • Organisational Skills: Exceptional organisational and time-management skills, with a talent for multitasking and meeting deadlines.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective liaison with a range of stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail: A meticulous eye for detail in document preparation and record management.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to attend the office weekly, with the option for remote work on other days.
